Niigata Meijo

Located in Ojiya city known for its Nishikigoi (ornamental koi) culture and bull sumo wrestling tradition. Produces a wide range from everyday to premium sake. The Boshi brand targets premium export markets.

Sasaki Shuzo (Fuji no Izumi)

Sasaiwai means Bamboo Celebration. Located in the Maki area west of Niigata city near the coast. Known for approachable everyday sake as well as premium junmai ginjo. Active in local community events and sake education.

Echigo Tsurukame (Kameda Shuzo)

Tsurukame means Crane and Turtle symbols of longevity and good fortune in Japan. Known for balanced elegant Niigata-style sake. Popular as a celebratory gift sake due to the auspicious name.

Masuragawa Shuzo (Masuragawa)

Ayumasamune means Sweetfish Supreme. Named after the ayu (sweetfish) found in local rivers. Located in the Myoko area with access to pristine snowmelt water from Mt. Myoko volcanic highlands. Traditional small-scale Echigo brewing.

Obata Shuzo

Located on Sado Island. Manotsuru means Crane of Mano Bay. Active in the Sado ecosystem restoration project (toki crested ibis conservation). Practices sake brewing in harmony with nature. The Gakusei label uses rice from toki habitat-friendly rice paddies.

Kirin Shuzo (Niigata)

Located in Aga town known for its scenic Agano River gorge and autumn foliage. Uses the exceptionally soft water of the Agano River. Traditional small-scale Echigo brewing operation focused on local market.

Hara Shuzo (Koshi no Homare)

Won the Champion Sake award at IWC (International Wine Challenge) in 2012 bringing global attention to Niigata sake. Koshi no Homare means Pride of Koshi (ancient name for Niigata). Located in the coastal city of Kashiwazaki.

Takachiyo Shuzo

Known for innovative Takachiyo 59 series featuring the same polishing ratio across different rice varieties to showcase terroir differences. Located in the heavy snowfall Uonuma region. Experiments widely with different sake rice varieties.

Aoki Shuzo (Kakurei)

Kakurei means Crane Feather. Yukiotoko (Snowman) brand is a beloved local favorite. Located in Shiozawa the heaviest snowfall area in Japan. The name references the 18th century book Hokuetsu Seppu about Echigo snow country written by Aoki family ancestor Suzuki Bokushi.

Hokusetsu Shuzo

Located on Sado Island off the coast of Niigata. Famous worldwide through partnership with celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa and his global restaurant chain. Pioneered ultrasonic aging technology. Sado Island is known for its gold mines and toki (crested ibis).
